“Across Peterborough, Stamford, Rutland and Huntingdon, more women are launching businesses on their own terms — and reshaping our local economy.”
Confidence, life experience and a desire for change are powering a record rise in female-led businesses.
Women across the UK are starting businesses at the fastest rate ever recorded – and the biggest growth is coming from women aged 50 and over.
New data released this autumn shows a powerful shift in the entrepreneurial landscape. Women are now launching more start-ups than men, with midlife women leading the strongest surge. It’s a trend experts say has been building quietly for years, fuelled by experience, resilience and the desire to take back control of work and life after the pandemic.
A new chapter for midlife women
Women in their 50s and beyond are rewriting the rulebook. Many are turning long-held passions, creative skills or community-focused ideas into thriving businesses.
For some, it’s about flexibility.
For others, it’s financial independence or the drive to build something meaningful after caring for children, aging parents or navigating career barriers.
And for many, it’s a spark that was always there – just waiting for the right moment.
Barriers are still there – but women are pushing past them
While start-ups led by women are increasing rapidly, funding still lags behind. Women founders receive only a tiny fraction of investment in the UK, and those over 50 often face additional bias.
Yet despite these hurdles, female-led businesses are outperforming expectations. Many are launching with purpose-driven missions, strong community links and sustainable values – areas where women continue to lead the way.
The rise of female empowerment networks
Support networks have exploded in recent years, offering free workshops, mentoring and peer-to-peer support for women entrepreneurs. From online communities to local networking groups in Peterborough, Stamford, Rutland and Huntingdon, more women are finding spaces where they can learn, share and grow.
These communities are helping break down the confidence barriers that have historically held many women back – particularly those re-entering the workforce after career breaks or navigating menopause-related challenges.
What this means for our region
Here in the East Midlands and East of England, we’re seeing this boom reflected in:
- • More women launching creative and service-based businesses
- • A rise in local female freelancers
- • New women-led community initiatives
- • More over-50 founders stepping into leadership roles
As cost of living pressures continue, many women are choosing entrepreneurship to gain stability on their own terms.
QueenBee’s take
This moment isn’t just a spike in statistics – it’s a cultural shift.
Women, especially midlife women, are reclaiming their power. They’re proving that confidence doesn’t peak at 25 or 35 – it grows with life experience, resilience and clarity of purpose.
And we’ll be showcasing these women across Peterborough, Stamford, Rutland, Huntingdon and beyond. If you’re a woman who has recently launched a business (or is thinking about it), we’d love to hear your story.
