In a world dominated by fast fashion, where creativity often takes a backseat, it’s refreshing to see young people rediscovering the joy of making things with their own hands. Local girl, fourteen-year-old Lola is one of them – and her sewing journey is nothing short of inspiring.

According to her mum, Laura, Lola has always been drawn to fashion and design. From a young age, she would sit and sketch ball gowns and wedding dresses, dreaming up silhouettes and details that many adults would struggle to imagine. So when her 13th birthday arrived, she asked for just one thing: a sewing machine.
What followed over the next 18 months amazed her family.

Almost entirely self-taught, with only a little guidance from her Nana on using dress patterns, Lola has developed an incredible talent. Her very first project was a yellow sundress, stitched carefully and proudly worn on holiday. That small success sparked something bigger. She began experimenting, adapting patterns to suit her style, and even repurposing denim from old jeans to create stylish tops.

Her creativity didn’t stop there. Lola went on to design and sew two beautiful outfits for her younger sister using blue butterfly fabric and has since made thoughtful handmade gifts for friends and family, including cushions and tote bags. It’s clear: Lola has a natural gift.
At just 14, she’s not only sewing clothes – she’s stitching confidence, imagination, and skill into her future.
A new generation of makers is emerging, and Lola is leading the way.
